Vocabulary Activities:
In this section, I will explain some activities that you can do with your child or have your child do independently to practice his or her vocabulary words.
Four Square Activity:
Students can take a piece of paper and write a vocabulary word in the center in a circle. He or she will then draw a large square around the edge of the paper, and draw a vertical and horizontal line through the center to divide the square into four parts. In each square section, the child will write the definition of the word, draw a picture to represent the word, write the word in a sentence, and rewrite the definition in his or her own words. This activity is really effective for students because it provides multiple modalities from which the student is practicing the word.
Acrostic Poem:
Students can choose a vocabulary word and write an acrostic poem using the letters of the vocabulary word. Each sentence of the poem should relate to the word somehow, either by defining the word, describing the word, or by giving a synonym or antonym for the word.
Spelling City Games:
Students can use games such as Hang Mouse to review the spelling of their vocabulary words. This is a great way for students to become familiar with their words and review the spelling of their words. Just create an account, and the students will have many games such as this to choose from!
